AB OBJECTIVE: Increasing & extending testing in asian countries suggested
by WHO as a way to obviate possible underdiagnosis of HIV infection in
asian continent. METHODS: We screened 3 groups not included in the
national surveillance programme which focus mainly on STDs, sex workers,
gypsies, blood donors. The first group was 94 cases of suspected
patients from medical wards having suggestive clinical picture like PUO,
chronic diarrhoea, resistant T. D, . . etc. The second were 60
transplanted kidney patients on regular immunosuppressives & various
opportunistic infections. The third were 138 oncological patients under
various modalities of treatment including 4 kaposi sarcoma. RESULT: All
cases were negative for HIV infection. DISCUSSION & CONCLUSION: despite
the absence of any evidence for local spread of HIV in our country we
are not naive to think that we are safe. continuous monitoring for the
situation is needed and we did so.
